[publication] Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and ChatGPT in education – a first rapid literature review #ai #chatgpt #tugraz #research

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

We did a first rapid literature review about chatGPT is used in education settings. Our paper titled „Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and ChatGPT in education – a first rapid literature review“ for the EDMedia and Innovative 2023 conference in Vienna is now online available.

Abstract: The usage of AI, more precisely ChatGPT, is almost embedded in our everyday routine. It reduces the time, effort, and cost of performing boring and now also very delicate tasks. It appears that ChatGPT knows everything and knows how to explain everything in a personalized and peculiar way, adjusted to the user’s preferences. In this paper, we will explore how ChatGPT can be used in higher education and what its limitations are, if any at all. We shall endeavor to examine both the advantages and disadvantages of ChatGPT in education and state of the art. We will use a literature review as our research method to explore and find the necessary answers. We will explore and use various scientific articles, newspaper articles, blog posts, and other relevant literature from many authors. Our results and conclusion will show how to use ChatGPT in the best way in education and what to look out for now that ChatGPT is still available to everyone.

[publication] Development of an Austrian OER Certification for Higher Education Institutions and Their Employees #OER #OpenEducation #research

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

Our chapter about „Development of an Austrian OER Certification for Higher Education Institutions and Their Employees“ got published.

The “Forum Neue Medien in der Lehre Austria” (fnma) is responsible for the development and introduction of a procedure to attest open educational resources (OER) competences and OER activities in higher education. The aim is to develop and implement a convincing and recognized procedure that succeeds in sustainably promoting and making visible OER activities and OER competences at Austria’s higher education institutions. Within this paper, the development of the Austrian OER certification approach, in other words its framework, will be addressed. A working plan and first results will be presented; among others, the competence framework and its compatibility with existing frameworks.

[publication] The ReDesign Canvas as a tool for the didactic-methodological redesign of courses and a case study #edil22 #tugraz

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

Our research, we presented at EdMedia + Innovate Learning 2022, about „The ReDesign Canvas as a tool for the didactic-methodological redesign of courses and a case study“ is online available:

Abstract:
Initially, in March 2020, when COVID-19 forced conventional face-to-face to pure online teaching, didactic matters were only of secondary importance. At Graz University of Technology (TU Graz, Austria) both the support team for Educational Technology as well as the instructors were mostly concerned with solving technical challenges. Nevertheless, a special tool, the ReDesign Canvas, was available to support lecturers in their endeavor to also address the didactic aspects of their teaching systematically. The article presents the work of the Educational Technology team of TU Graz within the March 2020 COVID-19 crisis as well as the application of the canvas in a redesign of an exemplary lecture.

[publication] A decade of first-semester students surveys concerning IT equipment and communication applications and effect of Covid-19 related experiences for first-year students in 2021 #edil22 #tugraz

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

One of our contributions to the EdMedia + Innovate Learning 2022 was about „A decade of first-semester students surveys concerning IT equipment and communication applications and effect of Covid-19 related experiences for first-year students in 2021

Abstract:
The technical equipment of first-year students and their preferred communication applications are changing, perhaps also influenced by their experiences in the Covid-19 pandemic concerning digital teaching and learning. This paper presents the 2021 survey of first-year students at Graz University of Technology (N=1,207) and compares the results concerning devices and applications with the results of the surveys conducted since 2011. It is striking that there are no striking changes in the endowment of the that can be interpreted as an effect of Covid-19 pandemic. A question introduced in 2021 about experiences with distance online instruction and experiences with online courses before and after Covid-19 shows clearly that new students‘ prior experiences with online learning here have dramatically changed as a result of school closures in Austria.

[publication] An Exploratory Mixed Method Study on H5P Videos and Video-Related Activities in a MOOC Environment #H5P #MOOC #imoox

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

Our article about „An Exploratory Mixed Method Study on H5P Videos and Video-Related Activities in a MOOC Environment“ got finally published already last year but was not mentioned in my weblog so far 🙂 :

In this paper, an exploratory mixed-method study is presented examining the video-related behavior of participants of a massive open online course (MOOC; N=1.238). Firstly, detailed log-file analysis of six videos has been carried out to compare clickstreams of videos with and without integrated H5P quiz integration. It shows quite different seeking and watching pattern behavior in video with H5P quizzes. In a second step, learners participated in an online questionnaire (N=707): Most of them see the quizzes in videos as always or mostly helpful (67%). The survey also shows that for many, taking notes, turning on subtitles, using the transcripts or even increasing the speed are important activities when learning with the videos in the MOOC. In a third step, interviews with ten MOOC participants are a source for qualitative insights in how the learners use the learning videos.

First certificates ceremoniously presented: The Austrian OER certificate for higher education institution set a milestone

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

A milestone 🚩in OER history in Austria – and unique worldwide: On Wednesday this week presented the new Website about the Austrian OER certification – a OER certificate for universities and persons. https://oer-zertifikat.at.

As representatives of our wonderful advisory board (board members are as well Sarah-Isabell Behrens, Jöran Muuß-Merholz and Rudolf Mumenthaler) Noreen Krause and Alexander Schmölz handed over certificates to the first Austrian universities today – in a ceremonial setting at the ministry.

Noreen Krause as well shared inspiring insights into OER developments in German higher education within her keynote, we had several workshops of the fnma SIG OER, talks about the Open Education Austria Advanced project and a report about recents years OER development in Austrian higher education by the SIG OER. (Vice) rectors of many universities accompanied their OER experts to see how and why their work is part of a bigger thing with relevance and need for their own insitutions, but even beyond this for a prosporous Austrian development.

And I sat there with goosebumps, and also a bit proud, how now 3 years of work with many people involved in the development of the OER certification body can show an impressive interim result  – and because so many proudly took photos and selfies.

Presentation: „Open Educational Resources in Austria: Experiences, challenges and successes“

Quelle: Sandra Schön Autor: sansch

I was very happy about the opportunity and the exchange with the colleagues – and especially on the level of the national strategy there is still a lot to learn and exchange! – Of course it is really a challenge to trace the development of OER in Austria in a few minutes, even if you only focus on the field of Higher Education.
